As reported in the Kansas City Star, one of the surprise stories of the first half of the 2019 season was Whit Merrifield’s emergence as a versatile All-Star infielder and outfielder. Just two years ago, Merrifield was a utility player who had never achieved status as an everyday starter but filled in a valuable role as the 25th man on major-league rosters.

Starting the 2017 season in the Minor Leagues, Merrifield displayed a work ethic and opportunistic perseverance when called upon, which ultimately earned him an everyday leadoff spot in the Royals’ batting order.
Manager Ned Yost describes Merrifield as one of the best he has ever encountered, having a unique ability to switch between defensive positions as needed. He has played every infield and outfield position in the majors since being drafted in 2010 and has achieved a reputation for performance in the clutch. Among the attributes that make Merrifield an All-Star in 2019 is his ability to get on base by any means necessary, including bunting and hitting behind runners.
